I didn’t know about the backlash Shopify CEO Lütke is experiencing for allowing Breitbart, the conservative news outlet, to remain a Shopify platform user/client. Lütke eloquently argues that while disagreeing with the anti-immigration ideology of Breitbart news, he is not in a position to impose his morality on others. He is an entrepreneur and not a moral authority. He uses this quote from the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) website regarding free speech I could not agree with the position of the ACLU and Mr. Lütke more:
“Over the years, the ACLU has frequently represented or defended individuals engaged in some truly offensive speech. We have defended the speech rights of communists, Nazis, Ku Klux Klan members, accused terrorists, pornographers, anti-LGBT activists, and flag burners. That’s because the defense of freedom of speech is most necessary when the message is one most people find repulsive. Constitutional rights must apply to even the most unpopular groups if they’re going to be preserved for everyone.”
I prefer a world where opinions that fly antithetical to my own exist. I want to evaluate such opinions and as a thinking being, discard them if the reduce freedom or learn from them if they have merit. Thank you Mr. Lütke for not reducing adults to children. Thank you for having courage to stand for what is right.
Edit 2017 Feb 11:
My post Free speech, free enterprise was read (surprisingly?). And generated a single e-mail telling me I’m a facist. For believing in free-speech. For believing a company should provide a product or service and not a moral agenda.
To be crystal clear I am pro-immigration. I am the son of Maltese immigrant parents that worked every day of their Canadian lives until their respective retirements in 2008 and 2017. They impressed upon me, my brother and my sister the reason why people emigrate from one country to another. They taught me early and repeated often that emigres would struggle with culture, religion and often with language. The emigres chose personal uncertainty and struggle so that their children would have opportunity. My parents immigration paid off. My brother and I are Ph.Ds with gainful employment in our respective fields of specialization. My sister is a nurse.
